No Visitors Thank You!

No one likes to be interrupted, with this in mind the Govt of the time threw up 103 Martello Towers around the south and east coasts of England Β from 1804 to about 1812. “KEEP OUT!” and “GETORFFMOILAND!” Big Stylee πŸ™‚

I like a good old trundle around the local coastal defences, they kind of give off a grumpy solidness which I can relate to. I want one!

Times change but sometimes intent does not. A couple of hundred yards from the Napoleonic Martello Tower situated at east lane Bawdsey in Suffolk there is a WWII shore defence system built 140 years later. Same purpose different foe.

  1. always a nice break from the usual eye-candy fluff elsewhere… and lovin’ the curmudgeonly style! Wish I could hear the accent to go with it.

    1. As the fashionistas would say,” Curmudgeonly is the new Black!” However In todays politically correct climate you probably can’t even say that! Pah! Cheers! πŸ™‚

  2. I laughed my way through your bio on the “About” page and smiled again on your commentary on this post. You are MARVELOUS. Great headline banner shot, too!

  3. Here in Mauritius, we have three Martello towers from the time the island was a British Colony. Two of those are in bad conditions and the ‘No Visitors’ definitely apply, but the third one has been refirbished and can now be visited to see how the tower operated at the time!

    1. Its a shame to see them derelict, the top images are of a cloverleaf tower that has been restored and can be hired out as a meeting venue, and the bottom image is of a tower that has been turned in to a dwelling. There is a string of 4 towers starting with the one in the bottom image, that run for about a mile or so, and all but one are inhabited.

  4. What spectacular imagery!
I have always wanted to live in a castle, but I suppose imagination and reading fantasy and historical novels shall have to suffice for the time being.
Thanks for stopping by my blog @ the merrymare πŸ™‚

    1. The one in the third image down is up for sale for about Β£400,000, but I’m sure that he is open to negotiation in this present economic climate πŸ˜€ Cheers πŸ™‚

      1. HAHA…. I try to stay on the light side of things as much as possible but BC (before coffee) is difficult to negotiate..

  5. East Lane Bawdsey Martello brings to mind Buck Mulligan’s “keep” in Ulysses . . . thankyouveddymuch . . .
